Reset your PlayStation 5 to Factory Default!

Reset your PlayStation 5 to Factory Default!

Okay, let's get your PlayStation 5 back to its original settings! Think of it like giving your PS5 a fresh start.

Important Note: Doing this will erase all your games, saved progress, and personal settings. Make sure you really want to do this! If you can, try backing up your saved data to a USB drive or PlayStation Plus cloud storage first.

Before You Begin: Back Up Your Data
A factory reset will delete all user data, including games, saved data, and settings. To preserve important information:
  • Use PlayStation Plus Cloud Storage:
    1. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
    2. Select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
    3. Choose Console Storage > select the game > Upload to Cloud Storage.
  • Use an External USB Drive:
    1. Connect a USB drive to your PS5.
    2. Navigate to Settings > System > System Software.
    3. Select Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
    4. Choose the data to back up and follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 1: Turn on your PlayStation 5 and go to the Home Screen.
This is the screen you see when you first turn on your PS5. It has all your games and apps.

Step 2: Find the "Settings" icon.
It looks like a little toolbox or gear. It's usually at the top right of the Home Screen. Use the buttons on your controller to move up and right until you highlight it, then press the X button.

Step 3: Scroll down and select "System".
In the Settings menu, use the down button on your controller to go down the list until you see "System". Press the X button to select it.

Step 4: Choose "System Software".
On the System menu, look for "System Software" and select it with the X button.

Step 5: Select "Reset Options".
In the System Software menu, find "Reset Options" and press X.

Step 6: Choose "Restore Default Settings".
You'll see a few options here. Select "Restore Default Settings". This is the one that will take your PS5 back to how it was when it was new.

Step 7: Read the warning and select "Reset".
The PS5 will show you a warning that all your data will be lost. If you're sure you want to do this, scroll down and select "Reset".

Step 8: Confirm your choice by selecting "Yes".
Another screen will pop up asking if you're sure. Select "Yes".

Your PlayStation 5 will now start the reset process. It might take a little while. Don't turn off the power during this time! Once it's done, your PS5 will restart, and you'll need to go through the initial setup process again, like choosing your language and connecting to the internet.
